As a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in the state of Utah, it is your responsibility to adhere to continuing education requirements each period in order to renew your license. Beyond license renewal being key to you maintaining your practice, continuing education is essential to stay abreast of what is happening in your field – something your clients will always appreciate you taking seriously. Education is how we all continue to learn and further hone our skills and expertise, so it’s certainly something to be celebrated. Though education is fantastic, keeping on track with the many hours you need to fulfill can be a challenge. Thankfully, there is a fantastic resource available to help you with that. Before we dive into the resource, let’s start by outlining what is required of Utah LCSWs in order to renew their license.
Licensee Requirements for Utah Licensed Social Workers
For licensed clinical social workers in the state of Utah, license expire on September 30 of every even-numbered year. Before that expiration date, licensees must earn a total of 40 hours of continuing education in order for their renewal application to be accepted. Of the required 40 hours, three must be specially related to ethics or law. Utah does not place a limit on the quantity of hours that can be earned online versus in-person, which allows licensees added flexibility. That said, all continuing education hours must be obtained through an approved entity, which is any course or program offered by the following: an accredited college or university, a community mental health agency, a public agency that offers mental health services, a professional social work association or society, or the Division of Occupational and Professional living. Additionally, the program or course must meet the requirements listed in point (B), sub bullet (d) of section R156-60a-304.
Key Takeaways:
- LCSWs in Utah are required to earn 40 hours of continuing education every two years with 3 hours specifically related to ethics or law
- Licenses expire on September 30 of even-numbered years
- Courses or programs are only accepted if offered by approved entities
