As a licensed marriage and family therapist (MFT) in the state of New York, it is your responsibility to adhere to continuing education requirements each period in order to renew your license. Beyond license renewal being key to you maintaining your practice, continuing education is essential to stay abreast of what is happening in your field – something your clients will always appreciate you taking seriously. Education is how we all continue to learn and further hone our skills and expertise, so it’s certainly something to be celebrated. Though education is fantastic, keeping on track with the many hours you need to fulfill can be a challenge. Thankfully, there is a fantastic resource available to help you with that. Before we dive into the resource, let’s start by outlining what is required of New York MFTs in order to renew their license each year.
Licensee Requirements for New York Marriage & Family Therapists
Marriage and family therapists in the state of New York are required to complete a total of 36 hours of continuing education in order to renew their license every three years. You can find your personal license expiration date on your green registration certification that you received with your last registration to practice – all 36 hours must be completed before that date. A reminder is sent out four months ahead of a licensee’s expiration date, which can be used to prompt your renewal, though, it’s always best to keep track of the date yourself. Of the 36 required hours every three years, up to (but no more than) 12 hours can be completed through a Department-approved self-study program.
Additionally, continuing education credits can be earned by teaching a Department-accepted course at an institution defined by section 79-10.8(a)(2) and (3) of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, by conducting a presentation at a conference sponsored by a Department-approved organization, or authoring a first-time article or book on the practice of MFT.
Key Takeaways:
- New York requires MFTs to complete 36 hours of continuing education every three years
- Up to 12 of the 36 hours can be earned through a Department-approved self-study program
