Of the 45 hours required of them, three must be in professional ethics and another three in suicide prevention and intervention (as of 2020). Though there is complete flexibility around the number of hours than can be earned through distance learning, all continuing education activities must be Board-approved in order to count toward the license renewal requirement. Board-approved continuing education activities include the following: college courses, continuing education classes offered by approved entities (such as NBCC), presenting to other mental health professionals (up to six hours), and attending Board meetings (up to three hours). Finally, it is advised LPCs maintain their own record of their continuing education certificates for at least two years in the event of an audit.
